Hair Stylist Training: What to Expect from Hairdressing Courses

Basic Hair Stylist Training

A hairdressing course usually consists of lectures to teach students about the theories of style and technique. Lectures will also include lessons in choosing the right haircut, tools, equipment and styling products. Knowing the purpose of specific treatments and techniques will help the student understand how and when to use them. Some cuts, for example, are better suited for certain types of hair and facial shapes, and some hair colors may also work better on other clients based on their skin tone and personality.

In general, hair stylist training will provide the students with the opportunity to develop their skills in cutting, styling and coloring hair of different types and lengths. Training may also include lessons in permanent waving, chemical retexturing and hair extension application. Students will be taught how to assess hair in terms of structure and quality and to identify the best cuts and treatments that will improve the appearance of the client.

The Goal of Hair Stylist Training

The goal of hair stylist training is to teach the student the right set of skills and knowledge to help him become sufficient not just as a professional hairdresser but also as a business manager and owner. To qualify for a license, students are required to pass additional classes in salon management, recognition and management of skin conditions, sales and marketing, customer service relations, use, care and maintenance of hair styling equipment, sanitation and hygiene and legal requirements as set by the health department.

Practical Training

As part of their training, students are required to perform hands-on application in order to perfect their technique. They are also expected to complete an on-the-job training or apprenticeship program prior to taking a qualifying examination for a license. OJTs and apprenticeships are supervised by a senior hair stylist or salon owner who provides useful feedback to the student. The training supervisor can also be a valuable reference for graduates who wish to apply for a job upon completion of their course.

 Admission Requirements

Schools generally require the student to have completed high school or its equivalent in order to enroll in a licensed program. Students must also achieve a passing grade in the placement test and meet the school’s financial requirements. There is an age limit imposed by schools to comply with state laws. The minimum age is set at 16, although some states may require the student to be at least 18 years old to be accepted in a hair stylist training program.
