How to Become a Hairdressing Assessor in Phoenix

In order to become a hairdressing assessor, you need to take hairdressing assessor courses and become qualified as an assessor. You can then look at the work they are doing and provide them with guidance and instruction. You need to help them hone their skills before they are allowed to graduate and leave the school to work at salons or to start their own businesses. This is a lot of responsibility, but it can also be a very rewarding career. In order to become an assessor, there are steps you need to follow.

Study to be a Hairdresser Yourself

Most of the time, assessors already have all of the training in hairdressing and a standard student would get. This can help you to really understand what your students need and what they are going through. It gives you hands-on experience that you can fall back on when they are asking you questions. It may be possible to skip this step in some cases, but it is advisable. It will help you be a better teacher than you would be otherwise.

Take Hairdressing Assessor Courses

Next, you have to take official courses that will show you how to be an assessor. These go above and beyond the skills that you have already learned. You need to be able to teach people, not just to do it yourself. Think of this as being similar to the degrees that high school teachers have to get. They need teaching degrees and certification to go along with a working knowledge of their chosen subject matter, whether that is math, science, or something else altogether.

Get Certified

Speaking of getting certified, you will have to do that as well. You need to get a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ), which you get when you have successfully completed the course. You will need to go into the workplace and do assessments, being judged on what you do, to become certified. You have to show that you can help students and that you can recognize both the good things that they do and the areas where they need improvement. Finally, you have to be able to show them what they should change, rather than just telling them what they have done wrong.

Become an A1 NVQ Assessor

After you have met the initial qualifications, you need to become certified to a higher level. This requires more training and studying. You then have to fill out an application. Be careful that you do not do this too soon. Take your time and make sure that you are really ready before you submit the application. This is a critical step in the process, and you cannot afford to be turned down. If you are, you can apply again at a later date, though.

Get the Final Qualification to Teach

The next step in your training is to get a PTLLS qualification. PTLLS stands for Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector, and it shows that you are ready to teach as a career. This is the cap on the whole project, demonstrating that you have learned all that you need to know about both hairdressing and teaching. You will now be allowed to apply for jobs. You must have all of the different levels of certification first, or you will not be considered, no matter how well you have proven yourself working as a hairdresser. This is because the qualifications are about more than simply your work.

At the End of the Hairdressing Assessor Courses, Apply for a Job

Once you have done all of this, you will not be an official assessor until you apply for a job at a local hairdressing school. If you do not have a lot of options in your area, you may want to look online. There are hundreds of different choices across the country and thousands across the world, if you are open to moving. You should make sure to mention all of your experience on your resume. The certification is your key to being considered for the job, but it may be your experience outside of hairdressing assessor courses that actually helps you get it.
