Tips to Prevent Split Ends

TipsSplitEnds2

Split ends are a major annoyance that plagues many people with medium to long hair. Over time breakage will occur with the ends of your hair, damaging the hair into separate fragments. These fragments will progress further up your hair, causing more damage if not properly treated. Learn the proper steps to preventing and treating split ends in your hair, avoiding the all too common damage that will result.

Avoid the Heat

While heating tools such as blow dryers, straighteners, and curling irons are all great for styling our hair, the damage they can bring is one of the greatest causes of split ends. Do what you can to avoid this damage by reducing the amount of time your ends are heated. Avoid direct contact with the tips, keeping the ends healthier. When using a straightener, make sure to use a comb or brush to guide the way. Select the portion you will be straightening first and follow behind the brush. By doing this, you will align the hairs in one direction, helping to reduce the chance of breakage.

Comb Wise

Be cautious when combing out your hair, especially when the hair is wet. Use a comb instead of a brush to get the initial tangles out, taking care not to yank through knots too hard. Start from the bottom and move upward as your hair combs smooth. Doing this will reduce the chance of split ends.

Skip the Wash

While personal hygiene is vastly important, you can gain a lot from skipping the shampoo for a day during your shower. Washing your hair every day will dry your hair out, creating a frizzy appearance. Give yourself the time needed to produce the natural oils that keep your scalp and hair fresh. If your hair seems too greasy, try using a dry shampoo on the days you don’t wash it. This will eliminate some of the oil while keeping your hair healthy.

Shampoo and Condition Right

On those days that you do wash your hair, make sure you are using the shampoo and conditioner right to fight against split ends. When using shampoo, do not scrub all your hair together, instead only focusing on the scalp. Allow the suds to rinse down and clean your ends without working the shampoo directly into them. This will prevent breakage better than any other solution. Never use shampoo without following up with conditioner. This should be applied to the ends of your hair, then given a few minutes to work its way in.

By making a few changes to your daily beauty routine, you can effectively eliminate some of the beginning signs of split ends. Schedule a trim on a regular basis as well to keep the ends of your hair healthy no matter its length.
