Lactic acid is also known as alpha hydroxy acids, or AHAs. Lactic acid is natural and derived from human metabolite, so there is almost no chance that a person will have an allergic reaction to it. One use of lactic acid is as a chemical peel for the face. This acid comes from milk and they can be used as gentle chemical peels. Another common peel that is used is glycolic acid peels.

Knowing the Differences Between Lactic and Glycolic Acid Peels

Lactic acid is thick, sticky and has a yellowish color. It is also more expensive compared to other types of acids that are designed as skin peels. Lactic Acid peels will make the skin feel warmer and there is usually little to no downtime required for a person to take right after the peel. Gylcolic acid peels can sometimes burn a person’s skin and may require a little down time for proper healing of the skin. Both lactic acid and gylcolic acid will cause irritation of the skin if it is left on the face longer than necessary.

Regardless of which peel a person is using the esthetician giving a person the peel will set a timer in regards to when the peel should be neutralized.

Weighing the Pros and Cons

Like almost all chemical peels lactic acid peels will take time to show promising results. Most people tend to see their skin showing improvement right after their chemical peel while others may not see results until days later. For specific skin issues lactic acid peels may require 1 to 2 treatments for six to eight weeks until optimal results are achieved. Results will also depend upon the type of skin a person has, strength of the peel and post-skin care regimens.

Lactic Acid peels are a wonderful choice for those undergoing a peel for the first time and they are a good option for those who have dry, oily, mature and sensitive skin. Glycolic acid peels can yield similar results like that of lactic acid peels but they can be a little harsher on skin, especially sensitive skin.

Throughout history make-up has signified beauty and stature within many social classes. As time has progressed so has the development of many of these beauty products and nail polish is certainly no exception. Although the benefits and drawbacks of the various kinds of nail polish have often been reserved to make-up professionals and those with cosmetology training. It is still important that the average user know the differences between each as well as which may best suit their needs.

Understanding Nail Products

Here is a basic breakdown of the pro and cons regarding Acrylic Nails, Gel Nails and Shellac Polish:

Acrylic Nails

Acrylic nails make hands more attractive. They are on put on over natural nails using glue to put a plastic tip on the natural nail. When the tips are glued on your nails, a mix of acrylic powder and liquid is laid over the nails. The acrylic starts hardening within 30 to 40 seconds and hardens completely within 15 minutes.

To remove the acrylic, soak it in acetone for 15 to 20 minutes. Acrylic nails were popular because they were cheaper than gel nails. However, there are a few negatives with acrylic. If the acrylic nail is moved, it can make a space between it and the natural nail. With acrylic being porous bacteria can form. Nail infections are not uncommon between the acrylic and natural nail, which is hard to see sometimes with the overlay. Gel nails are healthier for you.

Gel Nails

Gel nails are a more popular for enhancing nails. A thin layer of gel is applied over the nail, with a tip or sculptured nail. The sculptured gel nails use forms under the real nails over which gel is applied. It is cured becoming hard when put under an ultraviolet light. More layers of gel are applied and set up under the light. Taking it off is longer because gel has to be filed off.

Gel nails look more natural and have a more natural feeling because they are more flexible then acrylic nails. Watch out when seeing a salon offering gel nails. Some salons choose to do acrylic first and then put on a gel overlay. It is best to ask first before having your nails done. Gel nails are premixed and very durable. You can work well with your hands with these nails. Bacteria will not go through your nails with gel nails.

Shellac Polish

Shellac is a gel polish hybrid. Just like polish, it is put on with a base coat, which is two coats polish and one coat top coat. Then the nails are dried between coats of the polish with a UV light, which hardens polish to make it dry right after a manicure. Shellac has the same properties as gel does but without any filing. This polish has a high shine to it and levels out any nail imperfections. A Shellac manicure normally last for two weeks without coming off, chipping and losing shine. Shellac is made for toes too, which dries fast.

Aloe vera is an attractive plant to have around your home, but this versatile plant can be an important part of your skin care regimen as well. Scrapes, rashes, and minor burns may all be treated with a little bit of aloe vera.

People throughout the world use aloe vera for its healing properties. The extracted juice is used in cosmetics, creams, and ointments. Many people in the medical community recognize the healing effects of pure aloe.

Understanding Aloe Vera and Skin Care

The aloe vera leaf contains a clear jelly, and this jelly creates a protective covering over cuts, burns, and abrasions. The jelly may be most effective in its natural form. Aloe vera gel may be applied directly from the leaf by breaking off a piece from an established plant and squeezing the gel directly onto the skin or wound area.

Unused pieces of aloe vera may be placed in plastic wrap and stored in a refrigerator for later use. A cool windowsill may be a convenient storage space as well.

Burns and Aloe Vera

Aloe vera is a great remedy for minor burns that may happen during cooking. Scrapes on arms and legs may be quickly remedied with aloe juice as well. A small aloe plant placed on a kitchen windowsill may be useful in many ways.

Diaper rash and sunburns can be painful, and aloe vera can relieve these painful conditions quickly. Some people find taping a slice of aloe directly onto skin blemishes to be especially soothing.

Some aloe vera proponents recommend using mature leaves over immature shoots. Longer, older leaves usually have jelly with a yellow color, and the odor may be stronger. Some experts associate this color and odor with stronger curative properties.

Skin Care Benefits of Aloe Vera

Aloe has been used for centuries to heal a variety of ailments. Scientific research includes the study of aloe vera in connection with many types of burns.

Individuals living in warm climates often use aloe vera juice to relieve insect bites. Wounds may be protected with aloe juice as well.

Many people use aloe as part of their cosmetic skin care regimen. Aloe may be used to prevent wrinkles, baldness, and many other health and beauty concerns. Such applications can be readily found in various skin care products and advocated at many cosmetology schools that offer esthetic courses. Aloe vera’s potential for the promotion of skin health is seemingly limitless.

Almost every woman has a drawer full of make-up that she uses on occasion. In other words, she never uses this makeup. She is hoping to find a solution to help her to understand more about applying those awkward colors.

The Expiration of Make-Up Products

It’s important to remember that your beauty products and do have an expiration date. If you picked up something a while back because you thought it would look good with your Halloween costume, it is probably a good time to get rid of it.

Make-Up Products and Their Shelf Life

Here are a few things that you need to know about the shelf life of your makeup. Keep in mind, people may try to tell you that mascara never goes bad. Unfortunately, it usually has a shelf life of two years.

These “rules of thumb” are common amongst make-up artists and those who have had cosmetology training but, may not be common amongst the majority of its users. Here are some other make-up expiration guidelines:

Concealer

Your concealer is only going to last for one year.

Powders

Your powder may last up to two years if properly stored.

Facial Cleansers

Facial cleansers are generally good for 12 months.

Pencil Eye Liner

If you are sharpening your pencil eye liner, it may last three years or even longer.

Eye Shadow

If you can get a good deal on some eye shadow, take advantage of it because it will last three years. Remember, you can also use your eye shadow as an under eye liner.

Make-Up Brushes

If you take good care of your brushes, they may last many years. Keep in mind that you are going to want to clean them every couple of months. If you are using a sponge for your concealer, be sure to toss it every week.

Lip Liner

Lip Liner will be good for three years.

Lip Stick

Lipstick will last a couple of years depending on the brand. Keep in mind that it will go bad after it while. If it starts to smell funny, get rid of it.

Mascara

Your mascara isn’t going to last very long. You should usually replace it every four or five months. Keep in mind that it will dry out the more you pump air inside. This is why you should turn the wand inside the mascara tube rather than pump it.

New opportunities for achieving significant financial independence, are now available as a result of the developing hair salon industry. Salon professionals are now able to sell their salons and retire as multi-millionaires, which used to be an extremely rare occurrence.

Persons are able to earn significant income and are therefore financially independent in retirement, enabling them the opportunity to enjoy their earnings, however they may desire.

8 Rules to Successfully Marketing Your Hair Salon

Today’s contemporary salon owner is much more creative, innovative and entrepreneurial than their predecessors. To achieve success in the salon industry today, a new set of rules have to be mastered.

Offer Exclusive Products

The majority of products which sales representatives present as professional-only items, are actually available to the general public in stores such as Target and Walmart and on websites such as Amazon. To offer a line of products, which are really salon-exclusive, and available only by licensed professionals, then selective brands such as the entire line of products offered by Organic Salon Systems, should be sourced.

Make Marketing an Integral Part of Your Plan

Marketing strategy for your business is not limited to advertising, but also involves promotion and communication. Through advertising, the message that you want to present to the public, can be accomplished in the placement of print advertisements, billboard renting, and advertising campaigns on radio stations.

Several promotions can be offered to potential clients, such as a customer referral program, discount programs, or participation in radio interviews to highlight the salon’s benefits and services. Another marketing strategy is communication, possibly through visible signage that is attractive, press releases and a listing of your website in local directories.

Identify a Niche

Since there are many salons offering identical services, and competing for the same clients, then it is advisable to identify a niche market to target. You should develop your Unique Selling Propositions (USPs), which would be offers that are unique to your salon, and can be advertised specifically, geared to a particular niche.

Develop Long Term Relationships with Your Valued Clients

Instead of providing immediate service to your client, and enhancing their beauty on one visit, develop a program designed specifically for them, and recommend suitable products for them to use. You and your salon will be remembered as providing invaluable service, and a loyal relationship will be established.

Focus on the Cultivation of Ethos Rather Than the Development of An Image

In previous years, image was associated with the hair salon industry, however in today’s world, “building client affinity” is considered to be much more valuable than “building an image”. A client developing a feeling of attachment, and inherent similarity to the business, is tantamount to the development of client loyalty. Referred to as a strong ethos, a set of goals, culture, salon values and mission when developed, is the most effective method of building client affinity.

Be Savvy With Your Prices

It is sometimes viewed as inevitable that salons will lose clients, if they raise their prices. However this actually allows for the offering of enticing discounts, when conducting your promotional programs. The perceived value of your services increase, and potential new customers will actually pay the higher prices and ultimately expand your client network.

Ensure You Have an Exit Strategy

Firstly you need to develop your personal long term plan, which would include the amount of money you wish to embark on your retirement period with, and other factors, such as whether you want to leave the business to your offspring, or the amount you want to be able to sell the business for. Synchronizing your personal goals and financial status, with the goals of your business is key to defining your exit strategy.

Do Not Be A Star

Do not build your business solely on your talents, but rather develop the business from your talents. You would want the business to last beyond your retirement, so the business should not be dependent on your expertise. The salon should have its own value and continue to be successful, even if you are not involved. So commit to building a great business, as your ultimate goal, and put your ego aside.

In summary, the savvy salon in today’s industry, can generate considerable income for both owners and investors. The potential business owner, just has to take advantage of the various opportunities now available, which were not existent previously.

For people who are interested in pursuing a career as a hair stylist and becoming successful in the field, there are a number of things that you need to do to help you get more clients.

7 Successful Hair Stylist Tips

Gathered here are 7 tips to help you become a successful hair stylist.

1. Broaden Your Expertise

Become skilled and knowledgeable in all aspects related to hair and your industry. Learn how to handle all hair types and textures to allow you to service more clients.

2. Be Personable

Effective communication is important to keeping clients. Listen to what your customer is saying and understand what the client wants or needs. Do everything in your power to satisfy your customer. If the person is unhappy, offer a free hair cut or styling session on their next visit.

It is important to keep drawing new customers. Think of new ways to attract their attention such as a discount for a referral. Build a website or know how to use social media sites to help promote your salon’s services online.

4. Sell Your Products

Let your clients know about the types of products that you utilize to help them recreate the same style at home. This is extra service that clients appreciate and will encourage them to come back to your salon.

Experienced hairdressers may be wondering how to start a hair salon. This is an excellent question as self-employment offers business owners a host of benefits. People who have the capital to start a business should consider getting into the beauty industry.

Why Do People Want to Start a Hair Salon?

Most beauty school graduates get jobs at hair and beauty salons. While this is an excellent way to learn, it should be considered a stepping stone. Working for another person means that a hairdresser’s salary will always be capped. On the flip side, starting a salon means hairdressers could earn more money than they ever expected. They will also have the benefit of being their own boss.

How to Start a Salon: Finding Financing

The first step in starting a business is getting financing. Business owners will need a considerable amount of money to lease a premises, buy equipment and hire staff. As most people do not have this much money in their bank account, they will have to get a business loan.

All one needs to do this is draw up a business plan and make an appointment with a bank. The bank staff will ask applicants to fill in an application form. If the application is declined, business owners can look for investors. In the past, this used to be very difficult. Thanks to the internet, finding investors has never been easier.

Finding and Setting Up a Premises

After business owners have gotten funding, they should start looking for a building to run their business from. The ideal premises will be in an area that gets lots of foot traffic. That being said, many suburban salons are successful because they have little competition and low prices.

When entrepreneurs are looking at potential retail spaces, they should estimate how much work needs to be done. Generally salon owners will have to paint the property, put up signage and install sinks.

Knowing the Beauty Business

Unfortunately, a number of people who do not know much about the beauty business try to set up salons. Most of these people struggle to understand concepts and ideas that hairdressers are familiar with. Anyone who is not a trained hairdresser should consider going to beauty school. This will give them the knowledge they need to run a successful salon. Not to mention, trained owners can cover for their hairdressers when the salon is busy.

If you want to get your skin ready for summer, then there are different ways that you can do this with natural skin care tips.

6 Natural Skin Care Tips

Not only can choosing a natural solution be cost effective but is also usually gentler on your skin. There are a few things you will want to keep in mind.

Hydrate

One of the biggest issues with skin care is not being properly hydrated. This is important because it keeps you healthy and will help to keep your skin moisturized. Keep in mind that if you are outdoors where it is hot or are moving around a lot you will need to take in more water. This is why it is good to take water with you wherever you go.

Dry Brush for Natural Skin Care

Another way you can help keep your skin looking its best is to use a dry brush and scrub your skin every morning before your shower. This will help to get rid of dead skin cells through exfoliation as well as encourage new cell growth. It can also help bring blood filled with nutrients to the surface, which can help get keep the skin healthy. Be sure not to scrub too hard as you do not want to damage your skin.

Use Sunscreen

While getting a tan can seem like a great thing this summer, you do not want to get burnt. The burn will be painful, does not look pretty and can lead to serious issues down the road. This is why when you go out in the sun for any length of time, be sure you are wearing sunscreen. Remember to reapply if you will be out for a while. It is also good to use hats, sun reflective clothing as well as using lip balm with sunscreen.

Supplements

Eating a good diet can help keep your body healthy, which in turn will result in better skin. However, if you want to give your skin a little boost, then you should take a supplement. Look for hair, skin and nail formulas in your local pharmacy. These have a variety of different vitamins, especially B vitamins that can help your skin get the nutrients that it needs.

Try a Natural Face Scrub

There are a number of different natural face scrubs and treatments that you can try. The type you try will depend on your type of skin as well as your sensitivity to different ingredients. For instance, if you have oily acne prone skin, try using a ¼ cup brown sugar, 1 tablespoon honey and 1 tablespoon milk. Combine them to make a scrub that you can work into your face, let sit for about 5 minutes and rinse away.

There are many natural ways to help your skin. The thing is to remember the basics of skin care. Figure out the type of skin you have and this will help you find the natural skin care tips for your needs.

The right instructor training program can lead to a lifelong career as a leader. Working as an instructor can be both rewarding and profitable. There is always a need for knowledgeable instructors, and a person who can effectively lead others is always in demand. The right training program can prepare you for a career as a professional trainer, presenter or instructor.

What is an Instructor Training Program?

In short, instructor training programs give you the skills needed to lead groups toward professional competencies. Trainers and instructors may work on-site in corporate offices, training their students in workplace procedures. Trainers may also focus on instructing retail workers on sales techniques and company best practices.

Whether you are leading a team of insurance agents, a staff of retail sales associates or an event staff team, there is always a demand for qualified trainers. Almost every industry needs quality instructors.

What You Will Learn

While there are variations between programs, most training programs offer the same basic competencies. Coursework may include modules in:

Planning, writing and developing training objectives

How to write a lesson plan

Developing training aids and visual collateral

Presentation skills and verbal delivery

Evaluating and testing trainees

Working with specialty groups

Getting Started in Employee Training

The first step in becoming a professional trainer and coach is to take an instructor training course of study. After completing these courses, you will be equipped to lead both small and large groups and deliver lessons that will help them to advance professionally.

Essential Skills and Knowledge

One of the most essential skills you will need to become an effective trainer is to learn the differing learning styles that make knowledge retention possible. Visual learners benefit most from visual aids like slides, photos and videos. Other learners retain information by acting out a scenario or working on a hands-on project. Still others learn best through reading written material and writing reports. The key to being an effective trainer is to learn your student’s style and incorporate it into your lessons.

There are many great opportunities for effective trainers. Whether you are teaching a group of students to use a new product or training a staff of administrative assistants on new office procedures, the right trainer makes all the difference. Enrolling in a program that will help you to deliver the most dynamic content is the first step into breaking into this profitable and in-demand field.

In order to start a new salon, business owners must have the right beauty salon equipment. Without it, the business will not be able to run smoothly. Hair salons will not need all of the equipment that is used at spas and vice versa.

Beauty Salon Equipment: Setting Up a Reception Area

Both spas and salons will need to have a reception area. This area will be used to greet customers, do administration work and answer phone calls. Customers will also sit in reception while they wait for their appointment.

Listed below are some must have items for reception.

A reception desk.

Chairs and/or sofas.

A table for magazines.

Water dispenser.

A shelf to stack products consumers may want to buy.

Some salons like to have coffee machines so that they can serve their customers fresh coffee.

Those who give their clients cold drinks may want to get a fridge.

What Beauty Salon Equipment is Needed to Set Up Workstations?

Both hair salons and spas will have to set up a area where they can perform treatments. Spas generally only need a couple of tables. Clients can lie down on a massage table while their treatment is being performed. Another table can be used to store supplies. If the spa offers manicures and pedicures they should buy chairs and foot spas. Spas that provide specialist services like saunas and laser treatment will have to purchase the relevant machines.

Listed below are some pieces of equipments that hairdressers need to do their job.

Adjustable chairs for clients to sit on.

Sinks to wash their clients hair.

Work stations with a bench for magazines, products and tools.

Both spas and hair salons will benefit from having lots of mirrors on the walls. This allows customers to see the results of their treatment and/or haircut. Equipment trolleys are also useful for storing tools.

Most salon equipment can be purchased for a reasonable price online. Those who are on a budget can opt to buy second-hand equipment. If the equipment is in good condition and works well, it is generally as good as brand new equipment. Those who want to shop online should take care when selecting an online store. Sometimes the equipment sold at these stores are not of a high quality.

Avalon Is a Great Resource

If you are considering opening a salon, you should think about getting some beauty training. Having knowledge about the beauty industry will be a great asset when you are running your business. If you have any questions about beauty school, please do not hesitate to contact us at Avalon School of Cosmetology. Our staff will be able to advise you on which course is most suitable for your needs.
