A successful Arizona cosmetology school career is only half the battle when it comes to achieving hair design success. Here are three important character traits each cosmetologist must possess in order to create a flourishing business:
- Listening. Successful hair design is 10% ability and 90% psychology. Your client will often explain the specifics of their desired look and then expect you to create it. However, clients frequently don’t know how to express themselves with regard to their hair design: they’re not experts like you! Therefore, you must pay attention to visual cues to give you an idea of what their needs and expectations are. If you can listen to your clients and give them what they want, you’ll develop a base of consistently returning clients.
- Diligence. Cosmetologists must often work long hours. Many young cosmetologists are surprised about the amount of strain required to stand, hold a pair of scissors and comb, and lift their arms throughout the day. Cosmetologists must therefore have the physical and mental perseverance to continue working hard throughout the day, no matter how tired they may be.
- Attention to detail. In the words of world-class stylist Nicholas French, “With a pair of scissors and a comb and a brush, you can make people happy… you can make people miserable, you can make people get married, you can make people get divorced – all kinds of terrible things can happen. And you’re responsible for that!” Tiny details completely change the way clients feel about themselves. Attention to detail is necessary if you are to create a consistently-returning clientele.
