Different states have different cosmetology licensing requirements. If you are considering a career as a stylist working with hair, makeup or nails, you should be aware of the licensing requirements in the state(s) where you will eventually work. Our programs offering small class sizes and individualized attention can help prepare you to become a fully licensed cosmetologist in Arizona.
Cosmetology Licensing Requirements in Arizona
Arizona offers licensing in cosmetology, aesthetics, and nail technology. In order to be licensed in any of these fields, the Arizona State Board of Cosmetology requires that you have attended a licensed school and completed the minimum number of training hours mandated for your particular field. You will then need to take and pass the state examination for whichever of the three licenses you are seeking. Apprenticeships cannot be used to gain these hours.
The number of program hours varies depending on which license you are seeking with the minimum number of hours required being:
- Cosmetologist: 1600 hours
- Esthetician: 600 hours
- Nail Technician: 600 hours
In addition, the person applying must be at least 23 years of age and have completed at least two years of high school.
When applying for the license, evidence must be given that you have graduated from a school that offers coursework closely matching the requirements of the state of Arizona, along with the proper forms and fees. These forms and information on the fees can be obtained through the board. In addition, you will need to provide proof of having passed the state examination.
Coursework taken at Avalon School of Cosmetology can help you with the requisite amount of time and training needed to become licensed in each of these fields.
Reciprocity in Cosmetology Licensing Requirements
An alternate way to become licensed within the state of Arizona is to be already licensed in another state or country. In this case, Arizona offers a license-for-license procedure, allowing you to transfer your license within the same field. You can also choose to take the appropriate state board examination. In this case, you would still need to apply for the Arizona license in cosmetology, aesthetics, or nail technology, but instead of graduation evidence, you would need to supply proof of your license from the other state or country and information on license requirements there.
Cosmetologist licenses must be renewed annually. While Arizona does not currently require ongoing education in order to renew, continuing education in your chosen field can help you stay on top of current trends. Currently, the fee to renew is $30 per license.
