Do all Cosmetology Careers Require Licensing or Certification?

The world of cosmetology careers offers many exciting opportunities; however, cosmetology licensing is required.  Cosmetologists are trained in beauty schools to do many different services and treatments.  They can style, color, cut and otherwise chemically treat hair.  They can perform spa services such as pedicures and waxing services.  They can also perform nail services and apply artificial nails.  Some can even given facials and apply permanent make-up.  There are many different avenues of employment for those who choose to become a cosmetologist.  However, these opportunities cannot be reached until one receives their cosmetology license.

Cosmetology Licensing Requirements

No matter what state you live in, or what area of cosmetology you pursue, you will be required to obtain a license after going to cosmetology school. You need to be licensed in order to practice any type of cosmetology. This is much like the licensing that is required of nurses and doctors in every state.  Licensing is important to make sure that cosmetologist are following the industry standards and keeping their clients safe.  Specifics of state requirements for licensing can vary, but generally the requirements are:

  • Minimum number of training hours or credits earned from a cosmetology school approved by the state
  • Training can possibly be done through an apprenticeship
  • Must be at least 16 years of age
  • Have a high school diploma or a GED
  • Pass the state licensing exam; usually consisting of a written and hands-on test
  • Periodic license renewal
  • Continuing Education Credits

Contact the state board of cosmetology in your state in order to find out more about the specific requirements in your state.  Also be aware that if you move to a different state your cosmetology license does not just necessarily transfer to a new state.  There may be new requirements to fulfill or additional training and education required.
