What is the Average Salary for Beauty School Instructors

Many people want to know about the average salary for beauty school instructors. In October 2010, the average hourly wage for a cosmetology instructor ranged from $13.02 to $17.02. However, it is important for you to be cognizant of the fact that there are a number of factors that will affect your salary as a cosmetology instructor.  Below are some of the factors that determines a cosmetology instructor’s annual salary:

Average Salary for Beauty School Instructors

Like almost all other professions, the amount of money that a beauty school instructor makes is partially determined by the years of experience that he or she has. You may make less than $13.02 per hour during your first two years as a cosmetology instructor. However, you can make more than $17.02 per hour if you have 10 or more years of experience.

Your Location Will Affect Your Beauty School Instructor Salary

The pay rate for a cosmetology school instructor can vary widely among states. Hawaii, California and New Jersey are the highest-paying states for cosmetology instructors. The type of area that you live in will also affect your salary. For example, if you live in a large metropolitan area, then you could make more than someone who lives in a rural area.

How to Become a Cosmetology Instructor?

If you want to become a cosmetology instructor, then you must have a high school diploma and a cosmetology license. You must also have some experience in the cosmetology field. After you have completed those prerequisites, you will be able to enroll in a cosmetology instructor program. You will be required to complete anywhere from 500 to 1,000 hours of cosmetology instruction.  It is important to note that you will also be required to spend time outside of the classroom applying the information that you have learned.

The amount of time that it will take you to complete your cosmetology instructor training can vary. If you attend school full-time, then you may be able to complete your training within a year. It will probably take you two or more years to complete your training if you are a part-time student.
