If you are a licensed cosmetologist and have been thinking of relocating to a different state, chances are you have questions and have asked yourself – are cosmetology licenses transferable to another state?
So, Are Cosmetology Licenses Transferable?
Fortunately, it is possible to transfer your license; however, it is important to understand the requirements of both the state where you are currently licensed, as well as the state to which you wish to transfer. Different states have different requirements and understanding what is needed can help make the transition as smooth as possible.
How to Transfer Your Cosmetology License
The first thing you should do is to contact the licensing board in the state where you want to transfer your cosmetology license. Such information can usually be acquired through the accredited cosmetology college that you had obtained your cosmetology training. You need to find out the requirements for both education and work experience for that state. Many times, if you are transferring to a state with higher educational requirements, you can take an additional class to cover these extra hours; however, some states will also allow a combination of work experience to help meet the minimum educational requirement for their state.
Whether you will be required to take additional accredited coursework in order to have your current cosmetology license transfer to a particular state will depend on the board requirements in the state where you would like to transfer. Because each state varies on what they require and on how the transfer process will work, it is best to contact their licensing board as soon as you anticipate a move to that state.
Transferring a Cosmetology License and Meeting State Requirements
Some states, such as Connecticut will allow you to transfer your cosmetology license and will give up to 500 hours of credit for work experience in the field of cosmetology. Of course, additional course work can also be taken to help you meet the state’s minimum requirements for licensing.
Once you have met the requirements for licensing in your new state, you will generally be required to fill out a form to transfer your license. Additionally, you will need to provide valid proof that you meet the requirements for licensure in that state. Not all states have a standard reciprocity agreement, so your request for license transfer may be handled on a case by case basis.
Regardless of where you move, if you have left the original state where you were licensed as a cosmetologist, you must follow the necessary requirements to obtain a license prior to beginning work in cosmetology. The requirements for licensing are in place to help protect the public and it is never acceptable to work without a valid license. Give yourself plenty of time to not only research the necessary requirements, but to also meet them, prior to your move. Fortunately, when you ask yourself – are cosmetology licenses transferable, the answer is YES.
