The Road to Becoming a Hairstylist

In order to become a hairstylist, you need to get training from a trustworthy beauty college, but first, you need to do some research. Before enrolling in one, determine the programs offered, cost, school requirements, duration of schooling, and tools required.  In addition, ask for more information about the school by giving them a call or simply browsing through their website.

Things You Need to Know to Become a Hairstylist

A beauty school will not provide you a license, but it will provide you with the necessary training and education you need to acquire a license to practice. You start as a freshman student and will need to work your way up to the senior level. In order to do so, you will be required to pass written and practical tests. Be sure to hit the passing rate of 75% or even better.

As a hairstylist student, you will be performing different services on a model, which will include haircutting, perm application, hair color application, pedicure, manicure, facial, brow wax and tweeze, tip application, and make-up application. However, you may or may not be performing all of these services though.

Choosing a Model for The Practical Exams

It is crucial to pick the best model to work with. Someone who has not been to a beauty college is ideal. However, be sure that the model does not have acne, skin problems, very long hair, and head lice. To avoid failing the test, your model should not give you any hints or signals while you are performing the services.

Graduating and Getting Your License

After you pass the practical test and admitted to the senior level, you can now perform hairstylist services on clients. The services you provide will be tracked and monitored by your instructor. In order to receive your certificate, you need to pass the senior board with flying colors. The test is practically the same as the previous practical exams, but with the addition of the chemical straightening service.

After passing the test, your school will help prepare for the state board exams. You need to pass the exams to receive your hairstylist license. Keep in mind that you will be required to pay a fee for this and the cost will differ from state to state. Make sure to review and practice your skills before taking the exams.

At Avalon, we can train you to become a professional hairstylist. Proper education and training are necessary to obtain a license. Hence, we have developed various programs for you to choose from. The road to becoming a professional hairstylist starts with choosing the right school.
