A successful makeup artist can apply makeup quickly and professionally. This requires skills which can be learned at a Beauty College. Those who think that they do not have what it takes to be a makeup artist should not worry. Make-up application skills can be developed with time and patience.
A Good Makeup Artist is Flexible
The most successful make-up artists are flexible. They do a good job without complaining about their working conditions. It is important for make-up artists to remember that they are part of the support staff, not the “star of the show”. The ideal make-up artist will have a reputation of being easy to work with. Freelancers who are difficult and/or unreliable are unlikely to get work.
Many make-up artists work at beauty counters in department stores. While these jobs offer a reliable income, they do not pay as well as freelancing. For this reason, the majority of make-up artists opt to work as freelancers.
Freelance make-up artists will find themselves in a variety of different situations. For example, it is not unusual to work at weddings, fashion shows, television studios, hotels, conference centers and at a client’s home. As freelancers do not have a fixed schedule, they may be required to work in the early morning or late evening. Many make-up artists work long hours. Much of this time is spent waiting around to do touch-ups after the initial make-up is applied.
Why Makeup Artists Need to Pay Attention to Detail
Having good attention to detail is essential in this field. Most make-up artists will be required to recreate the same look at some point in their career. For example, a bride will come in for a test run before her wedding. One the day of the wedding, the freelancer will be required to replicate the look created during the initial consultation.
Attention to detail is especially important when a freelancer is working in film or television. If the continuity of the show is compromised, fans may complain. Freelancers can ensure they remember previous make-up looks by taking photos and making notes. Lastly, make-up artists should have a steady hand. Those that do not will make mistakes and possibly injure their clients. Having a steady hand will help with difficult areas such as applying eyeliner. Thankfully, a makeup artist can get better at applying makeup with practice.
