10 Common Beauty Terms

In the world of beauty, there are many terms and techniques to keep track of. It can be a bit overwhelming trying to get a hold of what everything means. Today, we are going to break down ten of the most common terms that you will hear working in beauty, especially cosmetology and esthetics.

1. Esthetics

Esthetics is sometimes confused with aesthetics. In the world of cosmetology, the definition of esthetics is the theory of beauty. It can also refer to a treatment or style that is designed to bring out a person’s looks and assets. An esthetician is a specialist in beautifying someone’s skin.

2. Tinting

Tinting is a color service used to color both eyebrows and eyelashes. It is a semi-permanent vegetable dye that gives the desired look of either lighter or darker hair. The results are immediate and can give the look of fuller, healthier, and shaped hair on both eyebrows and eyelashes.

3. Wax

Wax is a very thick substance that is used to remove or style hair. There are several types of waxes available today, and most of them include one or more of the following: sugar, paraffin, lanolin, beeswax, castor and carnauba wax.

4. Undercutting

This is a term that is used to describe styling and cutting the hair. This technique keeps the layers at the back of the head shorter than the layers that are at the front. This technique is used to bring down the weight of the hair.

5. Bangs

A bang is a layer of hair that is located close to the forehead. It is cut a lot shorter than the rest of the hair. Many people get bangs when they want to make their face look shorter or to bring more attention to their eyes.

6. Natural

The term natural is often used interchangeably with the word organic in the world of beauty. However, it is important to note that the two do not mean the same thing. Products that have a natural label are made up of all natural ingredients. Organic products are made up of ingredients that are grown organically, meaning synthetic fertilizer were not used to grow the ingredients that are used in the products.

7. Chemical Relaxers

A chemical relaxer is a type of hair lotion that is used to “relax” tight curls for people that have curly hair. This will make the curls more easy to manage and control especially when wanting to straight iron the hair.

8. Derm

Derm is the root word of a number of other words including epidermis, microdermabrasion, and dermis. The word pertains to the skin. Estheticians who primarily work with skin will find the word in terms of dermatology, microdermabrasion, etc.

9. Foiling

Foiling is a process used to lighten hair. Sectioning off the hair by using a comb, the hair is colored separately than the rest of the head as to not get the dye anywhere else. The hair is then wrapped in foil to sit while the hair absorbs the color. this process is also used for highlights.

10. Permanent Curls

Permanent curls, also known as a perm, is chemically curled hair. Using heat and chemicals, the hair is broken down from its original hair structure and reformed. After the hair is fresh and clean it is then separated and wrapped in curlers. After, the hair is coated with a waving lotion or reagent. A perm can last up to six months.
