Educational Requirements For Cosmetologists

A cosmetologist is a professional who has been trained to provide a variety of beauty-related services. They may spend their days styling hair, performing scalp and facial treatments or doing manicures and pedicures. Most cosmetologists rent a space in a large salon, but some choose to open up their own salon.

Cosmetology Education Requirements

Cosmetologists are very skilled at what they do, and it may seem as though the skill comes to them naturally. However, they are required to complete training before they can legally practice. Below are the educational requirements for cosmetologists:

High School Diploma Or GED

The majority of cosmetology programs require that students possess a high school diploma or GED. They are also required to be at least 16 years old. However, it is important to note that some programs allow students to begin taking cosmetology courses before they graduate from high school.

Hours Required

Cosmetologists are required to complete 1,400 to 1,600 hours of educational training. This training can be completed at a vocational school, beauty institute, technical school or community college. You have the option of earning a certificate or associate’s degree.

The number of credit hours that you take per semester will determine the amount of time that you spend in cosmetology school. Full-time students are usually able to complete the training within one year. However, if you attend school part-time, then it may take you up to two years to complete the training. If you do not work or have a family to take care of, then you may want to take classes full-time so that you can finish faster. Part-time studies will be a better option if you are a very busy person.

You will be required to take courses in hairstyling, nail care and skin care. You also have the option of taking business courses. Many students find cosmetology school to be challenging and rigorous. You will not only be required to learn a-lot of new information, but you will also be required to apply the information that you learn. You will spend a-lot of practicing on dolls and real people.

Licensing Requirements For Cosmetologists

All states require cosmetologists to be licensed before they practice. Keep in mind that the licensing requirements can vary from state to state. The licensing exam consists of a written and practical portion. You will be required to pay a fee before you take the test. Additionally, you will be required to renew your license every year or two.
