How to Become a Cosmetology School Instructor

Since the cosmetology field is one of the fastest growing industries in the entire world, it should come as no surprise that cosmetology school instructors are increasingly needed to teach beauty school students who will become nail technicians, hair stylists, estheticians, and barbers. For these valued instructors, qualification can mean a simple certificate or rigorous training, depending on their location. However, the majority of states do stipulate the same minimum typical requirements for instructors to be considered qualified.

The Cosmetology License

In order to teach others about a skill, an instructor must prove that he is knowledgeable on the topic. Similarly, a cosmetology teacher needs to possess an ordinary cosmetology license to remotely be considered for the position. Typical cosmetology schools mandate that students receive between 1200 and 1800 hours of lessons in order to be considered for course completion.

The Necessary Experience

Once the regular cosmetology license is obtained after passing the state exam, an individual must work in the cosmetology field for a minimum of 800 hours. Qualified applicants must not only meet the hour minimum, but also must hold the license for at least six months prior to applying to become an instructor. Depending on the area, this holding period can be as long as five years.

Cosmetology School Instructors From Other States

If a licensed cosmetologist applies for a position in a state differing from the one that licensed the individual, the new state will require the certificate or license from the originating state. The applicant would bring this license to the state board located in the new state, where the license can be transferred. It is also at this time that applicants can find out if they are lacking any required work experience or educational hours stipulated by the new state. In order to qualify as an instructor, an applicant needs to possess a cosmetology license granted by the state in which they are applying to work.

The Cosmetology Instructor Application Process

With all of the requirements confidently met, applicants simply submit their information to local beauty schools for consideration. With proof of possession of the requirements along with any and all available references, individuals may easily find positions training hairstylists, makeup artists, estheticians, and more.
