Weak nails are classified as those that easily break, whether that is lengthwise or peeling from the corners. In many cases it is hard to grow weak nails very long past the fingertip before a break can occur. Right around one fifth of people are affected by brittle nails with most of those being woman. Although age is one of the biggest causes, there are other factors that can have their contribution as well.

Because there are so many different factors, it is important to determine which one is the cause of your brittle nails. If possible, determine when the problem started occurring. Simple things like being exposed to water, detergent, or soap too long can be the cause, or it can be linked to a medical condition, serious or minor. A weakening of your nails can be a sign of heart, lung, kidney problems, or even diabetes. Once you have determined the problem, you can more effectively treat it.

The solutions

The first possible solution that should be addressed is an increase in vitamins. These are essential for keeping your body in optimal shape. If you are lacking in vitamins and minerals, your nails will be the first place it shows. Increase the amount of niacin, calcium, vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin B, and iron in your diet. To get the most of these essentials, include more bananas, oatmeal, and peanuts in your diet.

In some situations, the leading cause of brittle nails comes from a lack of moisture. There are moisturizers that can be purchased to keep your nails healthy. If you don’t want to buy these products, try mixing egg yolks and milk to dip the tips of your fingers in. this will strengthen the nail by bringing moisture back.

Protect your hands, keeping them away from the elements that may cause the nails to break. Wear gloves in colder weather or when doing the dishes. After washing your hands, dry them to prevent water from seeping into the nails.

If none of these solutions make a significant impact on your brittle nails, you may have a deeper problem on your hands. Talk to a doctor or other professional to ensure you don’t have a medical condition you didn’t know about. Your nails say a lot about your overall health; make sure to take care of them in the best way possible.
