Tips for Passing the State Board of Cosmetology Exam

PassingStateBoard

After you have completed your hours at cosmetology school, it is necessary to pass the state board of cosmetology exam before you can start practicing in your state. The exam may vary depending on the state you live in, but there are a few things that can be done in general to prepare. Make sure you understand the basics and have the skills you need to complete the task.

Skills

Over the course of cosmetology school, you have spent many hours learning the basic techniques that will not only help you pass the test, but set you up for success in your future as a cosmetologist. Some of the most important things to learn include:

  • thermal curling

  • blow dry styling

  • hair cutting

  • chemical waving

  • sculptured nail

  • manicure

  • basic facial

  • hair removal

Make sure when it’s time to take the practical exam you understand each of these principles and can perform them well.

Practical Exam

The practical exam can be a nerve racking event for many future cosmetologists. Here are just a few tips to help you succeed:

  • Pack in advance – make sure you pack the kit you will be using well in advance, at least a couple of days. Double check the night before to ensure all your supplies are there. This will ensure you won’t be missing anything when you need it.

  • Be on time – don’t be late or you might not be able to take your test. Have a good idea of where you are going, what kind of parking is available, and how long it will take you to get there. It is best to arrive at least 10 minutes early to ensure no problems will occur.

  • Listen close – sometimes the instructions during this exam can seem confusing, especially when you are nervous. Take a deep breath and listen close, ensuring you fully understand what is expected of you before starting.

  • Pace yourself – it is good practice to time yourself before these events and see how long they will take you. Then when you are in the exam, be sure to pace yourself, giving you plenty of time to finish everything needed.

  • Have confidence – don’t worry too much, if you have practiced and taken the time beforehand you will likely succeed. Make sure you are confident in your ability to deliver the best services.

Passing the state board of cosmetology exam is important, representing a big step in your career. Make sure you properly prepare to succeed here.
