5 Hair Care Mistakes We’ve All Made


Taking care of your hair is essential for not only looking great, but avoiding damage to your locks. The reality of hair care, however, often means that we fall short on upkeep and the best ways to care for our hair. Everything from allowing hair to become severely damaged to getting stuck in the same style for a long time can make hair care seem like more work than it needs to be. Here are 5 hair care mistakes that we’ve all made.

  1. Damaging Hair
  2. One of the most common mistakes we all make is damaging our hair. This usually happens by excessively using heat tools like curling irons or straighteners, washing too frequently, not enough, or failing to condition properly. Remember to avoid using heating tools too much, wash every other day or so, and always use conditioner. These are simple steps, but can go a long way toward preventing split ends and other damage.

  3. The Same Old Style
  4. It’s easy to get stuck in a routine where you keep the same style for months or even years. Trying something new is a great way to enliven your look. Even small alterations are a good way to break out of the same look and experiment with a fresh style. This could involve a new cut or simply a new approach to styling your hair. When you’re tired of a boring look, breakout and change directions.

  6. Another common mistake is not keeping regular appointments to have your hair trimmed and styled. If you are growing your hair out, you’ll need to trim it on a regular basis to keep split ends under control. You’ll better prevent breakage and your hair will look and feel healthier when you keep appointments with your stylist to have it trimmed and cared for.

  7. Mistreating Your Hair
  8. Above all, properly and consistently caring for your hair is important to keeping your hair healthy and your look vibrant. Wash and condition with quality shampoo and conditioner and take the time to care for and style your hair on a regular basis. You don’t have to go all out everyday, but be vigilant about keeping your hair healthy.

  9. Too Much Sun
  10. This may seem like a strange mistake, but over exposing your hair to the sun can damage it–just like heating devices damage hair. UV rays can take some of the strength out of your hair, making it more susceptible to breaking. If you are going to be spending a lot of time outdoors in the sun, take a hat with you to help protect your hair from damage.
