Back to Beauty School Guide

The first day of school is nerve-wracking at any age. Not knowing what to expect is never fun. That’s why we put together this guide for you! We’ll give you some ideas on what to wear, what to bring, and what to expect on your first day of beauty school. This should help you focus on what you care about: killing it on your first day of cosmetology school! Hopefully, this will take some of the stress off of you on your first day!

What to Wear on Your First Day of Cosmetology School

The Wardrobe

Some schools have dress codes. You may be provided with or need to purchase a smock or branded school shirt. We have some basic ideas to help you shop for some safe options. When planning your cosmo school outfits there are two things you’ll want to keep in mind: wear black and be comfortable. It’s no secret that stylists almost always wear all black. Believe it or not, there’s actually a reason behind that. Not only does black look crisp, clean, and classic, it’s also practical. Cosmetologists work with lots of products that can be messy. As a student, you’re learning. You will have some spills. Black clothes hide stains and dyes! Here’s a look we love. It’s cute, casual, and comfortable!

The Shoes

As a cosmo student, you will be spending a lot of time on your feet. When you’re out on the salon floor you will be standing the majority of the day. You want to make sure you’re dressing comfortably. Wear comfortable shoes! The last thing you want is blisters or aching feet. Closed toed shoes are generally recommended because there are lots of tools, chemicals, and hair that you don’t want your skin exposed to. Imagine dropping scissors on your toe (ouch), or getting hair stuck between your toes (no thanks!) Sneakers are always a safe choice. They will stay secure, keep your feet protected, provide traction in case of spills, and are comfortable for long days on your feet. They don’t have to be ugly! Here are some adorable options:

What to Bring to Your First Day of Cosmetology School

The Supplies

Many of the basic supplies you need for your beauty program will be available in supply kits that are purchased from or provided by your school! These kits vary by school in price and contents depending on program and season. Kits are always being updated to keep up with the latest trends. Check with your school about the specifics for their kits. And get excited. Opening your kit feels like Christmas morning! There’s something so satisfying about seeing all of the tools and essentials you are going to be using to prepare for your dream career.

While most of the supplies you will need for learning purposes will be in your kit, don’t forget those essentials to help you get through the day. These are some items that people often forget. You’ll be glad if you have them, and probably end up sharing with your friends!

  • Notebook and Pen/ Pencil

What to Expect on Your First Day of Cosmetology School

Your first day will mostly be comprised of introductions and orientations. You’ll be learning lots of new names, faces, and procedures. Your school probably has a computer system they will get you set up in. You might get a locker or space to keep your belongings in. You may even get your picture taken for a student ID. There will be numbers and passwords you’ll want to remember. Write down important information (good thing you will be prepared with your notebook and pen). Don’t be afraid to ask questions as they come up. If you have a question, chances are someone else is probably wondering the same thing. Remember, this is school, you’re here to learn!

Above all else, have fun! This is the first day of your future. Enjoy it, soak it all in, and make memories. You will be graduating before you know it and you will remember these as the good old days.
