What Can a Cosmetologist Do?

Love beauty? You may want to consider becoming a cosmetologist. In general, cosmetologists can provide beauty services for hair, skin, and nails. As part of the cosmetology curriculum at Avalon Institute, you can expect to learn things like:

Hairstyling and Hair Care

Everyone loves a good hairstylist, but it’s more than just what they provide. When learning how to become a cosmetologist, you can expect to provide to clients:

  • Hairstyles
  • Hair cuts
  • Hair coloring
  • Hair treatments
  • Beard and mustache trimming and touch up shaving
  • Perms
  • Hair relaxing treatments
  • And more!

You can work with clients to choose the right haircut and color for them, based on their face shape and skin tone. You can also provide recommendations to what would look best for clients and create an experience that not only helps guests look good, but feel good too! After all, a good haircut can provide confidence!

If a client comes to you with an image to recreate on their own hair, you’ll want to know how to provide it! You can learn how to create smooth balayages, pixie cuts, fun colors, or close shaves and fades. You’ll also need to know how to tell clients how you might adjust the hairstyle they want to fit their face shape, hair texture, and more.

Skincare

While estheticians focus solely on skincare, cosmetologists can learn the basics of skincare in their training! Licensed cosmetologists can expect to learn elements of skincare, including:

  • Facials
  • Basic makeup application
  • Waxing and other hair removal techniques

The goal of good skin care is to help clients have smooth, glowing skin. But, good cosmetologists can also become makeup artists to create gorgeous looks for special events or even fashion shows. This is a great skill to have when clients want a one-stop-shop to go to if they need hair and makeup done for weddings, prom, or other special events.

Manicures and Pedicures

Cosmetologists can also use a variety of nail products, such as gel polish to create stunning manicures or pedicures. You can also learn how to care for nails to create the appropriate shape and keep them healthy and strong.

Science and Sanitation

Along with the beauty side of cosmetology, licensed cosmetologists can also get an education in the science behind the products they use on an everyday basis. Understanding the chemistry behind the products they use can help cosmetologists find the right products for their clients.

Products for dry skin are very different from products for oily skin, so cosmetologists should be able to recognize what each client needs and use the right products for them.

They can also learn proper sanitation techniques to keep their guests safe and healthy. From how to clean your makeup tools to your hair cutting equipment, it’s important to keep things sanitary for each client!

Marketing and Business

Beauty professionals are also often in charge of managing their own clients and doing their own marketing. That also means learning how to provide the best customer service, especially during hair or skin consultations to understand exactly what your clients want from their appointment.

After an appointment, licensed cosmetologists often have the opportunity to recommend products for their guests to purchase and replicate their look at home.
