The advantage of scholarships is that even if you don’t qualify for some federal aid options, scholarships could be available for you! Because scholarships are awarded independently of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®), you may qualify for awards that aren’t offered by federal agencies.
Scholarships are often considered “free money” that don’t have to be paid back and are determined by your application, not just financial need. It may be more work upfront to apply for scholarships, but it’s also an amazing opportunity to build your professional portfolio.
The other advantage of scholarships is that you can apply for as many as you’d like! There’s no limit to how much you can earn, as long as you build a stunning application.
When Should I Start Applying for Scholarships
Now! Whether you’re in beauty school or not, it’s a great time to start looking at the application process for any scholarships you can find!
Some scholarships are available in the winter and some are available in the summer. Some require you to be in beauty school, while others only require proof that you’ve enrolled into a school, even if you haven’t started yet.
You can reach out to the school’s financial aid department to get the resources you need to apply and tips to help you apply. Talking to the financial aid team at your school is a good way to see if they can accept the scholarship, as many scholarships send the money to your school to apply the money directly to your outstanding balance.
Even if you’re already in beauty school, you should consider still looking for scholarships because you may be eligible to apply months after you’ve started class. While you’re in school, take as many pictures and videos as you can to build a portfolio of looks you can use on your application.
Where Can I Find Beauty School Scholarships?
You can find scholarships by doing a simple search or reaching out to your school’s financial aid department. The financial aid department can let you know what options you may have or even discuss scholarships offered by the school. But, you can get more than scholarships that are offered by the school.
Look for beauty school scholarships offered by different organizations, or use directories and tools where scholarships are listed in one convenient place! The two most common scholarship lists are from:
If you are only finding scholarships available to traditional post-secondary education colleges, don’t get discouraged! There are scholarships available specifically for beauty schools, too. Look for opportunities from hair salons or other beauty-specific businesses, like the Great Clips scholarship.
Many scholarship finders offer filters to separate scholarships available for traditional colleges vs. beauty schools. In fact, you may find scholarships available for specific programs, where it may be available only for esthetician students or cosmetology students, too.

How To Apply
Each scholarship is going to have slightly different application requirements. You’ll potentially need:
- Your FAFSA® results – some scholarships do use the FAFSA® to award applicants based on their financial need
- A written essay following a certain prompt
- A video submission
- A photo album or portfolio
- Proof of beauty school enrollment
No matter what scholarship you choose to apply for, make sure to read application requirements carefully. While you may be able to take bits and pieces from each application, it’s better to build each application separately to make it unique!
It may be a lot of work, but the return can be worth it! Read our free guide for more tips on how to craft the perfect application, plus more info on how to apply for scholarships.
Are Beauty School Scholarships Different From Regular Scholarships?
Not necessarily! The goal of most scholarships is to provide the resources someone needs to pursue what they love. While some scholarships may be targeted to certain schools or for certain programs, the concept of scholarships are the same no matter what organization offers them.
The main difference that you may see with beauty school scholarships is that the admissions requirements may be different. Many of them require a video or photo submission because beauty is a visual and creative industry!
